Scoring Sytem in Mahjong
Mahjong employs several scoring systems, but the underlying concept is consistent: the more intricate the combination, the higher the points awarded. Here’s an overview of the basic scoring rules:
Standard Win: A typical win earns the player 10 points.
Pong of Dragons or Winds: Completing a Pong (three identical tiles) of dragons or winds grants 10-20 points, depending on the tiles involved.
Pure Combination: A combination where all tiles belong to the same suit (such as all bamboo or all characters) rewards 40-80 points.
Secret Hands: Certain hands, like those made entirely of Pongs, are highly valuable and can be worth 50 or more points.
Self-Drawn Hand: If a player wins by drawing the final tile themselves (without relying on discarded tiles), their score is doubled (a 2x multiplier).
When a player wins, the others must either pay them points or follow the betting system in place, depending on the game’s rules. While different Mahjong variants may have their own unique scoring methods, the main principle remains the same: the player with the most valuable hand or the first to declare “Mahjong” wins the game!
